Before you look at a single part, answer three questions honestly:

- How long are you out? Overnights near town need far less than a week-long, off-grid loop.
- Who's coming? Solo travel, a partner, kids, a dog — every passenger is gear, food, water, and weight.

Step 2: Understand the two numbers that make or break a build
Every first-time builder tracks the price of parts. Almost nobody tracks weight — and weight is what strands rigs, wears out brakes, and sends handling sideways on a loaded highway run.
Your budget
This one's obvious but worth stating: decide up front what you can spend, and plan the whole build against it — not part by part as impulse strikes. Planning the full list first is what stops the classic "I've spent $6,000 and I still don't have a way to air back up" problem.
Your payload (this is the one people miss)
Your rig has a payload capacity — the maximum weight of people plus cargo plus accessories it's rated to carry. You'll find it on the door-jamb sticker, usually phrased as "The combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed XXXX lbs." That number is your real limit.

It's shockingly easy for a "modest" overland build to blow past its payload rating — which compromises braking, handling, tire load ratings, and safety, and can void warranties.
Rule of thumb: every pound of accessories is a pound you can't spend on people, water, and gear. Budget your payload as carefully as your dollars.
A note on tires and wheels: heavier tires and wheels absolutely affect ride and performance, but they ride on the axle and largely replace your stock rolling stock rather than adding to the cargo you're carrying. Step 3: Build your parts list in priority order
Now the fun part. Group your build by system and order each group by what you'd buy first. A sensible first-overland-rig priority usually looks like:
- Recovery & safety first. Traction boards, a recovery kit, tire repair, a quality air compressor, first aid. Cheap, light, and the stuff that gets you home. Do this before anything cosmetic.
- Tires. The single biggest capability upgrade for the money. Right size and load rating for your rig and terrain.
- Suspension. Enough to carry your loaded weight and restore ride height — not necessarily maximum lift.
